A farmer from a small Swiss settlement decided to build a house on the site of an old, almost collapsed barn. However, local authorities did not authorize the demolition because they considered the structure to have historical value.
The situation started to stall, but after a while the man had an idea. He decided to build his new house right inside the barn and there was nothing the local authorities could do about it.
The farming family used the barn to store their crops for over a century. Over time the laws changed, the farmer built a new barn, the dilapidated building sat abandoned for many years. At one point, the man decided to demolish it and build a house, but officials did not approve the demolition either, citing that the barn gives the surrounding landscape a historic look as the reason for their decision.
The old stable remained like this for years, until one day an idea came to the farmer’s mind. As he was not allowed to demolish the stable, he decided to build his house in the old stable.
After a long study of the structure, the architects developed a plan and began to implement it. The authorities gave permission for construction if it did not affect the appearance of the barn, so another internal structure had to be built almost from scratch.
Interior walls appeared in the building, which became the exterior walls of the house. There was enough space to equip several floors and spacious living rooms.
The interior never reminds us that everything is in the old stable.
The exterior of the building has remained unchanged, although if you look closely from the outside it is not clear that a modern residential house was built in the barn. Officials had no choice but to issue a certificate and inspect the building.
The house itself has become a real landmark of the region. Local residents discovered the unusual structure and now come to study the result of the farmer’s work.
