‘Back to the bride’: Smash Mouth frontman and ‘Shrek’ hit songwriter Steve Harwell has about a week to live

The American rock musician’s loved ones have spoken frankly about his incurable illness. Steve Harwell has only a few days to live.

The 56-year-old artist has suffered from alcoholism all his life. Now Steve has been diagnosed with the final stage of liver failure. The Smash Mouth frontman’s condition worsened the day before. The rock musician was discharged from hospital to spend the last days of his life with his loved ones.

Steve is now at home with his fiancée and friends. The singer’s manager has revealed shocking details about his illness. “He is at home where his friends and family have gathered for the last three days. He probably only has a week or so to live,” TMZ quoted Harwell’s manager as saying.

Representatives for the Smash Mouth group have confirmed the information. “Steve is resting comfortably at home and is being looked after by his fiancée and hospice staff. We hope that people will respect the privacy of Steve and his family at this difficult time,” the Daily Mail quoted the musicians as saying.

Harwell’s health problems began more than 10 years ago. In 2013, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. The condition prevents the heart from pumping blood. Soon after, Steve was given another serious diagnosis – the neurological disease Wernicke’s encephalopathy.

Harwell founded Smash Mouth in 1994. The artist became widely known in Russia thanks to the hits All Star and I’m a Believer, which became the soundtrack to the animated movie Shrek. In 2021, the rocker left the band after a scandal with insults to the audience at a concert in New York. Then Steve’s condition deteriorated against the background of taking psychoactive substances.
