Why children built a bus stop for a 6-year-old boy

Every morning, Kid Ryder Keelam waits by the roadside for the school bus. He can’t run outside the house like the other children when the bus comes.

“Ryder is in a wheelchair and there are about 20 metres from our house to the road,” said the boy’s father Tim.

The child has to go out early and wait outside in all kinds of weather. The parents put up an umbrella to protect the child from the rain, but because of the wind it broke. Tim shared his situation on Facebook and asked if anyone had an unwanted large umbrella. One of the secondary school teachers read the post and suggested that the students build a weather shelter for Ryder.

The building material company provided $300 worth of boards, and the Kilam family paid for some of the materials. It was built quickly. “Winter was coming, and we didn’t want Ryder sitting outside under an umbrella,” said the school teacher.

“Now after school my son asks to stay here, now it’s his new fortress,” said Tim. “It’s fantastic, everyone has teamed up to help,” he added.

The father took a picture of his smiling son and sent it to the schoolteacher.
