Recently, a video surfaced on the TikTok platform showing a delivery driver abusing a Texas veteran after delivering a pizza to his home. The delivery man, named Corey, is an employee of DoorDash, an online food ordering company.
Lacey Purciful, the military veteran, had generously tipped Corey 25% on a $20 pizza, which Corey was less than pleased with. Footage from Purciful’s doorbell camera captured the entire exchange. Despite being taken aback by Corey’s rude behaviour, Purciful led with kindness.
The released video clearly shows Corey handing the food to Pursiful and her family, who immediately thanked him. However, as he hands over the pizza, Corey reluctantly utters the phrase “I just want to say this is a good house for a $5 tip”. As he turns to leave, Pursiful replies: “You’re welcome,” and Corey hurls profanities at her as he leaves.
Pursiful, who is recovering from a severe spinal cord injury sustained in a drunk driving accident, ordered food from DoorDash in the hope that the company would provide meals for her family during her recovery.
The Delivery Man Faced Repercussions from His Company after the Offensive Incident
Before joining the Army, Purciful worked in the restaurant industry for many years and knows all too well the importance of tipping your waiters generously. She also prides herself on being a good tipper, and has provided evidence of her generosity over the years. She posted a picture of her previous DoorDash orders, showing one instance where she tipped nearly 60% on a $17 bill.
After the incident, Purciful’s husband contacted DoorDash to let them know what had happened. The company then gave the couple a $5 voucher, but after the situation escalated, DoorDash decided to look into the matter further.
She disclosed that previous orders have been extremely late to the point where sometimes the food will no longer be edible.
After DoorDash investigated the matter, they gave Purciful an additional $75 gift card and fired Corey. A spokesperson for the food company released the following statement:
“Respectfully asking for a tip is acceptable, but abusing or harassing someone is never acceptable. We’ve removed this dasher from our platform and [contacted] the customer. Our rules are in place to ensure that everyone who uses our platform … has a safe and enjoyable experience”.
Before DoorDash was able to de-escalate the situation and take appropriate action, viewers who saw the video had a lot to say. Many commented on Corey’s appalling behaviour and called for him to be fired immediately. One TikTok user, who later heard about the resolution of the issue, felt his dismissal was justified:
“Boom! Karma followed up with him, haha!”
Although the issue was eventually resolved, Purciful shared that this was not the first problem she has had with DoorDash. She revealed that previous orders have arrived so late that the food is sometimes no longer edible, or a delivery person simply leaves the food on her doorstep without telling her it’s there.
