Neighbors help a disabled person not to lose his housing

Lamar Harris is disabled and has mental retardation. He has lived his entire life in a neighborhood in Gloucester Township, New Jersey.

When Lamar was eight years old, his mom died. Four years later, his grandmother passed away. Lamar lived with his father and brother. In 2015, his father passed away suddenly, followed by his brother a year later. Lamar has no relatives left and lives alone.

The man has always helped neighbors by picking up trash and walking dogs. He earned money by doing small jobs. Because of his disability, the man has trouble reading and has no understanding of financial matters.

Over the years, Lamar had accumulated unpaid house bills. Due to a lawsuit, he was facing foreclosure on the house.

After learning about Lamar’s problem, neighbors organized a fundraiser on the GoFundMe platform. The amount needed is $50,000. The money will go toward paying off debts and preserving ownership.

“I’ve been taking care of Lamar for years, he’s like a family member. I can’t let anything happen to him,” shared his neighbor Tom Brake.

Another neighbor, 25-year-old Chris De Stefano, gave Lamar $3,000 to pay the debt. The neighbors will try to help Lamar prove to the municipal authorities that he will pay off the debt and be able to continue paying his rent.
