HOW SIGN LANGUAGE HELPED DURING THE FLIGHT

During a flight from Massachusetts, a flight attendant on the loudspeaker announced that someone with sign language skills was needed. Among hundreds of passengers, there was one.

It was 15-year-old Clara Daly. The flight attendant told the girl that a deaf-blind passenger was on board and needed help.

Although Clara had only started learning sign language a year ago, she decided to help. In elementary school, she was diagnosed with dyslexia (reading and writing disabilities). To increase her ability to communicate, she began to learn sign language.

The girl sat down next to a disabled passenger named Tim. She touched his arm, and they began to communicate using their hands. Clara realized that the man wanted to know how much time was left on the flight. She asked the flight attendant and passed the information on to Tim.

Thanks to the communication with Clara, the passenger did not feel so lonely. The girl’s mother videotaped her daughter’s interaction with Tim. Watch the video.
