Police fulfill the last wish of an elderly woman to visit her son 2000 km away: they find a destroyed house – Story of the day

A couple of officers responded to an emergency call and found their former teacher, who had an crazy plan. They decided to help her and traveled with her, only to discover a heartbreaking reality. But her journey was not in vain.

Officer Martín parked in front of the bus station and saw that an ambulance had arrived before them. They had received a call about an older woman who had collapsed, and he and his partner, Officer Santana, went immediately.

They both got out of their patrol car and saw paramedics treating an elderly woman, who appeared to be conscious and talking.

“Ms. Laura?” Officer Santana asked with wide eyes. Officer Martin frowned. He too had recognized the woman.

“Mrs. Laura. Are you okay?” he asked, as they both approached.

The older woman looked up and narrowed her eyes, but finally recognized them. “Julian! Christina! Or should I call them ‘officers’? I haven’t seen them since they graduated high school. What are they doing here?” she said breathlessly.

“They asked us to come in response to an emergency call. Is everything okay? What are you doing at this bus station?” Officer Santana sat up and put her hand on the shoulders of her beloved teacher.

Julián and Christina had been classmates many years ago, and Mrs. Laura was their math teacher. The woman had always been charming despite being strict. She had retired and lived in her house in a quiet area of the city.

“Well, I was hoping to travel to the coast. I need to see my son,” Mrs. Laura said, her face wrinkled.

“Pedro? Why? Is something wrong with him?” Christina asked, continuing to touch the woman’s shoulder.

“I don’t know. I haven’t heard from him for months. He doesn’t call me often, but he usually answers when I call him from time to time,” Mrs Laura explained, looking down and shaking her head.

“Well, I’m sure we could get some people to do a look around his house or something,” Julian suggested, but the old lady shook her head.

“It’s just that I’d like to go in person. I need to find out if my son is all right, and I…. I don’t think I have much time left in this world and I would like to see the sea one last time,” the woman said very quietly.

The paramedic stood up and Christine looked at him, “She doesn’t need to come with us, but she’s very weak. I wouldn’t recommend letting her go alone on the bus, especially as far as the coast,” the paramedic said and left.

” Mrs Laura, you heard him. You need to go home and rest now,” Julian said softly.

“I can’t. I have to make that trip! My son and the sea are calling me. I can feel something happening, but I don’t know what it is. Please, help me.” Mrs. Laura begged.

Julian and Christina looked at each other. They couldn’t force her to go home, to rest. Neither of them knew what they could do for her until the officer had an idea.

“There’s a reason we ended up here. We have to help her. Technically, it may not be our job, but being a police officer is about helping people, right?” Christina argued to her partner.

Julian sighed. “Well, it’s not necessarily like that. But I’d also like to help her. Let’s do it.”

Their captain was not happy with that decision. A few days later, Julián and Christina used their free time to take Mrs. Laura to the coast. It was 2,000 km away and they knew it would be a tough journey.

But their teacher had one wish that could be their last and they were determined to fulfil it. The road was long and winding, but they had more fun than they had expected.

Mrs Laura had always been friendly, but the officers had learned a great deal about her during the journey. They reached the coast after a four-day journey.

It would have been quicker, but along the way they stopped at inns to give Mrs Laura a rest. However, they had no idea what awaited them until they arrived at her son’s house.

“What happened here?” – Mrs Laura asked, looking wide-eyed at the picture before her.

“Are you sure this is Pedro’s house, Mrs. Laura?” Christina asked, just as confused and alarmed.

Julián looked around, while the worst thoughts came to his mind. Pedro’s house was completely destroyed. Something had happened. The surrounding houses were not in the best condition, but it was evident that they were being repaired.

“I’m going to ask. Wait for me here,” said Julián, approaching the neighboring houses.

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Laura. We’ll get to the bottom of this. I’m so glad we went with you on this trip,” Christina said, hugging the old woman.

Julián managed to talk to a neighbor, but he did not receive good news. He walked back to the teacher and her classmate, thinking about how he would tell them what had happened.

Mrs. Laura collapsed onto Christina’s shoulder and she comforted her. A hurricane had passed through the area and Pedro had refused to evacuate. He died when a tree branch fell on the roof of his house.

The neighbors raised money together to pay for Pedro’s burial; they had no idea he had family, so no one had informed Laura. They told Julián where his grave was.

“I’m sorry, son. I’m sorry I wasn’t the mother you needed. I should have done more. I should have called earlier and offered you my home so we could keep each other company.”

Mrs Laura wept inconsolably over her son’s simple tombstone. Christine and Julian decided to give the grieving mother a chance to say goodbye.

“I’m glad we came with her,” Christine said, and Julian nodded.

A few hours later Mrs Laura was ready to leave and asked to be taken to the nearest beach. The officers agreed without hesitation.

The waves of the sea gave them a sense of peace. They were tired from the journey and the heartbreaking news of the day. Mrs Laura took off her shoes, sat down on the sand and let the water touch her feet. Christine and Julian did the same.

The older woman sighed. “I love the beach. I haven’t visited it enough,” she commented. “Don’t make that mistake, guys. Visit the ocean more often.”

“I will, Mrs. Laura,” Christine assured her. They all stood in silence and admired the sunset over the horizon.

Shortly after they returned, Mrs Laura passed away. Christine and Julian arranged her funeral and burial; she had no family. Some of their colleagues from the police station came to support them.

The officers were marked by those last days with their former teacher. They would never forget her or her words… “We have to go to the beach more often,” Julián told Christina when the funeral was over.

“We will,” she said with a smile.
