Police arrive on a call of an old man and find him unconscious and starving in a locked cellar – Story of the Day

The 911 operator answered the call of a starving old man, but he lost consciousness before he could finish his sentence. When the police arrived at his house, they found him unconscious and locked in the basement.

Albert, 89, was a grumpy old man. All his neighbors knew about it. But it wasn’t all his fault.

When we get older, we want to be close to our loved ones, our children, and our grandchildren. But Albert had no one to share his worries with.

His wife had died a few years earlier of heart failure. His sons hardly kept in touch with him after they had all moved to their new homes with their families.

There was so much in Albert’s heart, but he couldn’t say it out loud. If he spoke, he couldn’t stand the loneliness. That’s why he was so grumpy. But no one understood him.

“He’s out of his mind!”

“Stay away from him! I’ve never seen a family visit him!”

“He’s crazy! That’s why his family pushed him away!”

This is just an example of the many rebukes from his neighbors. It made him realize that people were humiliating him so much without even knowing his story or his reasons.

Sometimes he would spend hours talking to his late wife, crying and silently praying to God, asking Him to call him to Himself. At other times he blamed God for causing him to live a lonely and miserable life.

One day Albert felt particularly keenly the emptiness left by his wife. He went down to the cellar to get his things, but when he tried to open the door to get out, it jammed. He grabbed the handle and tried with all his might to open the door, but the handle broke and fell to the floor. Albert was trapped inside.

“My God… How am I going to get out now?”. He began to panic. He was stuck in the basement with no way out.

Next to the ceiling was a small window for the ventilation system. He noticed this and tried to shout for help, but in vain. No one would come to his rescue. All the neighbors despised him, although he had never been rude to them.

Albert trembled with fear. “How… How am I going to get out? God, what am I going to do?”

Albert reached into his pocket and found his mobile phone. He sighed, feeling relieved that he had a way out. He dialed 911, but the call went unanswered because there was no connection. He circled the basement, hoping to catch the signal, but it was no use.

Old Albert burst into tears; he had never felt so helpless. “Excuse me, can anyone hear me? Please help me! I’m stuck!” – he shouted as loudly as he could, but no one came to help him.

Three days passed. Albert was weak, hungry, and dehydrated. His body was ready to give up and he did.

“I’m coming, darling,” he whispered to his wife with tears in his eyes. “Maybe this is how it has to be. So I can finally see you again.”

But Albert was wrong.

Suddenly the network returned and his phone beeped!

With trembling hands, he quickly dialed 911, informing the operator that he was trapped in a dark basement for 72 hours without food or water!

“Help me! I’m trapped! Please, I’m hungry!” – he shouted.

“We have your location, sir. A unit is on its way. Could you please elaborate on the nature of your problem? Hello, sir… Can you hear me?”.

No sooner had Albert finished his sentence than he passed out and the phone went dead due to a dead battery.

Fortunately, the nearest police unit to his address responded quickly. It consisted of Officer Wooten and his partner, Officer Davis.

“It’s the police. Open the door!” – Shouted Officer Wooten. But no one answered.

“The house isn’t abandoned,” Officer Davies said. “Neighbours said he lived alone. An old man, probably 89 years old…”.

Finally, the two officers decided to break down the door, but couldn’t find Albert anywhere in the house. Then they decided to check the cellar and found him unconscious.

“Bloody hell! Call the paramedics! He’s alive!” – Officer Davis said, checking Albert’s pulse.

A few minutes later the old man was rushed to the hospital and luckily he was able to be resuscitated. When he opened his eyes, he saw two police officers. They found his sons’ contacts on his phone and called them; they were also present.

“Dad? Are you all right?” – his eldest son asked. “We’re very sorry. We’ve been so busy with our lives that we forgot to check on you.”

‘Yes, Dad,’ said his youngest son. “We realize we’ve behaved badly.”

“You’d better shut up!” – Officer Wooten said. “Your father needs someone to look after him. Don’t make the same mistake I did.”

“When I first joined the police, my father was the same age as yours. This job is crazy, you never know what’s going to happen. It was my father’s birthday, but I couldn’t attend because I was investigating a case and he died of a heart attack that day. I still regret that day. Perhaps I should have asked my partner to take the case for the day and spend more time with my father. Please don’t do that to him. He deserves better,” Agent Wooten added before leaving with his partner.

Albert’s sons realized that they had been wrong to exclude him from their lives. So they hired a full-time nurse and visited him often to check on his condition. From time to time Officer Wooten stopped by Albert’s house to check on him. After all, he knows how elderly parents feel when left alone.
