A woman found a baby on her way to work and brought him into the office. Her boss found out about it, got angry, and threw her out, but only later found out what a wonderful thing she had done.
“Hush, hush, hush, baby. It’s going to be all right. Hush, hush, hush,” Clara soothed the baby in the pram she found on her way to work. She couldn’t believe that someone could leave their baby in the middle of a cold street in Minnesota.
Clara was running to work, but she couldn’t ignore the pram and decided to take the baby with her. Unfortunately, the poor baby was probably hungry or scared, because she wouldn’t stop crying, and Clara was afraid someone would hear them, even in the break room.

Clara worked as a janitor in the headquarters of a building office, and usually, these people were not afraid of noise. It was part of their job. However, their boss was strict about keeping noise levels outside, not inside the administrative offices.
Clara took the child inside, into the warmth, and thought about her next step, which was calling the police. She had just finished talking to the lovely control room when her boss, Mr. Gilmore, entered the break room in a rage.
His eyes were wide open and his cheeks were as red as Clara had ever seen. He was stern but usually kept away from everyone in the office. Now he was angry. Angry.
“Clara! What the hell are you doing? You brought your kid into the office! Are you out of your mind? That’s grounds for dismissal!” – Mr. Gilmore wailed, completely terrifying her.
– Mr. Gilmore, that’s not…

“I don’t care! Get out of here! I have an important meeting and I don’t want any noise in the office! For God’s sake! People need to learn to separate their personal lives from the office! Get out! And you’d better start looking for another job because I’ll be talking to Human Resources after my meeting about you breaking our rules!” the boss shouted some more and left the break room.
Clara felt tears welling up, but took a deep breath and shook off the emotion. If this was the kind of place where they fired employees because of such stupidity and didn’t listen to explanations, she didn’t want to work there. Many offices around the area were looking for help. She would turn elsewhere.
Finding out why this child was abandoned was much more important, so Clara packed her things and went outside, wrapping the child in her jumper. She couldn’t leave straight away because the police would come to talk about the baby, so she waited for them at the entrance.
Luckily, the officers were quite nice. They took the child with them and would look for her parents or find out what had happened.

When they asked why she was waiting outside in the cold, she had to explain that her boss had kicked her out of the office and effectively fired her for taking the baby inside.
“Well, that’s about it. I’ll have to look for another job later,” Clara told them and shrugged her shoulders.
Policeman Salazar frowned, but Clara thanked him, said goodbye, and left. She thought about the child and what would happen to her, but it was out of her hands.

The next day Clara went to the building office after receiving a phone message about a meeting with HR. Apparently, they wanted to fire her personally, and she thought it was a small thing. But at least she should have been given severance pay, and she could get unemployment benefits while she looked for a new job.
The woman from Human Resources was always nice, but that was her job. However, when she led Clara to her office, the caretaker was shocked to see Mr. Gilmore standing in the middle of the room, apparently waiting for her.

“Clara, please sit down,” he asked, and Clara frowned when she saw the chagrined expression on his face, but complied. “First, I want to apologize for my outburst yesterday. I was wrong. The meeting caused me a lot of excitement and I have some perception issues. I shouldn’t have shouted.”
“It’s all right, Mr. Gilmore,” Clara said timidly. Never in a million years had she expected an apology from her boss.
“Yesterday, when I left work, an officer was waiting for me on the street and told me the whole story,” her boss continued, and Clara’s jaw hung.
Mr. Gilmore continued to apologize as he realized that Clara was just looking after the abandoned child. He continued the story of how one day his grandson was lost, and they only found him with the help of a good stranger who missed his bus to stay with the child.

“I don’t know what would have happened to my dear boy if a stranger hadn’t stayed with him, so what you did was honorable. You can keep your job and get a raise, plus the money in this account as compensation,” Mr. Gilmore concluded, surprising Clara even more.
“There’s no need,” said Clara, shaking her head.
“I insist. Please, it’ll make me feel better,” said the boss. His sincere eyes made her accept the money and everything else he offered.
After a few days, Clara learned that the child’s mother had been found. Apparently, someone took the baby stroller when the mother was distracted and somehow left it in the middle of the street, where Clara found it. She did save this family from a terrible loss.
Meanwhile, the amount of money Mr. Gilmore gave her in her bank account was enough to change Clara’s life, and after working for him for a few more months, she opened a cleaning service and became her own boss. She never wanted to be dependent on anyone again.
