When the cashier disrespected the veteran, the homeless man stepped in to help him. Before leaving the shop, the manager asked the man why he helped the elderly veteran, and his answer touched the manager’s heart.
Karl was homeless. He begged for alms, got food and slept in alleys or wherever he could find a place to sleep. Karl did not have the comforts of life or even a home, but he had a kind heart which has inspired us to share this story with you.
It was a hot summer afternoon when Karl went to the grocery shop. He was hungry, so he decided to buy food with the money he had received from begging in the morning.
Looking around the shop shelves, Karl bought himself an orange drink and a packet of cheap crackers. He then queued in front of the cashier, waiting his turn to pay the bill.
Suddenly he heard two people arguing and when he looked out of the queue he saw an older man standing at the till.

Karl saw the cashier shouting at the older man. “Are you serious?!” – she shouted. “Are you going to count those coins one by one? This is going to take you forever, mister! You need to get a move on!”
“Oh, it won’t take long. I … I’m sorry. I’ll make it quick,” the elderly man replied, his hands shaking as he continued to count coins. The cashier had already bagged the purchases and waited impatiently for the man to pay. At the same time, she kept interrupting him and tapping on the counter to get him to speed up.
When she saw that the man was in no hurry to count the coins, she lost her temper. “Why come here if you can’t pay? Don’t you have anything? Not even a card, huh?”
“I’m a veteran, miss. Don’t you think I should be spoken to more respectfully? I never said I wasn’t going to pay!” – He replied defiantly, which annoyed her even more. Some people in the queue supported the cashier, impatiently waiting their turn, but no one helped the elderly veteran.

When he saw that the veteran was in trouble, a man approached him and came to his aid. This kind man was none other than Karl.
“I will help you, sir…. ,” he said and began to help the man count his coins.
The cashier interrupted them again. “Why are you helping him? It’s his fault he only brought change! Not to mention the fact that a crude man like you can’t help himself and you’re going to help him?” – she scoffed.
Karl did not reply.
“Here you go, sir. A total of fifty-two dollars!” – he exclaimed as he finished counting.
“And I have another fifty dollars,” said the elderly man. “That brings the total to $112. Here you are, Miss… – he added, stacking the coins on the counter in two rows. But there wasn’t enough money.
“And here’s four dollars less!” – she shouted to him, pointing to the note. “What the hell! What’s the matter with you? You’ve kept everyone waiting and now you’re four dollars short!”

Finally, Karl spoke up. “You don’t need to shout at him. Here’s your four dollars!” He threw two two-dollar notes on the counter.
“Take the damn money and apologise to him! Do you realise, ma’am, he said he was a veteran? He once selflessly served our country and here you are criticising him? People like you are not worthy to be called human beings!”
“It doesn’t matter. Now, if you are finished, go away!” The cashier took the money and ordered them to leave.
“I won’t let you get away with it,” Karl warned her, “Your boss should know!”
Seeing Karl’s kind attitude towards him, tears came to the elderly man’s eyes.
“What’s your name, son? My name is Simon,” he said.
“My name is Karl, sir. I’m homeless,” he said rather loudly, “but I still live better than most people here who have money! I can help you take your groceries outside, sir,” he offered.

Simon said he could handle it, but when Karl began to insist, he gave up. But before he could help the veteran, Karl first put the items he had taken back on the shelf, as he knew he would not be able to buy them again.
They were then about to leave the shop when a man in a suit approached him. “Joseph Smith. General Manager,” the sign with his name on it read.
Mr Smith stood to the side and watched everything that was going on. When the situation had resolved, he approached Karl and asked him why he had helped Simon. “…Why did you do it?” – he asked.
“Why not, sir?” – replied Karl,” “I’ve lived a hard life on the streets and most people avoid me or ignore me completely. You can see that I look poor. But there have also been many occasions when people have been kind to me. I know that if you do good, it comes back to you somehow. So I couldn’t bear to have someone rejected like that!”.
Mr Smith smiled. “Would you like to work in my shop?” – he asked Karl, as if he hadn’t heard anything he had said earlier. “I need to hire a shop steward.”
Karl’s eyes began to water. “What, I – I don’t understand, sir… Are you… are you serious?”

“You can start today if you like!” replied Mr Smith. “So, sir… what is your name?”
“Karl, sir… I’m not sure how to say it, but thank you! Thank you very much, sir. I’ll do my best.”
“I know, Karl,” Mr Smith nodded thoughtfully. “I’d like to have an employee who believes in doing good. People like you are rare these days.”
Karl couldn’t believe that everything had worked out so well. He started his day as a homeless man and ended it as a shop steward with a good salary. He thanked Mr Smith and promised to be a diligent worker. On the other hand, the cashier had to lose her job after disrespecting Simon. In the end, arrogance is never an excuse for anything.
