A dog guarded a lost baby girl for twelve hours

This story happened in Missouri in 2018. In the evening, Timberlin Merritt went out to call her three-year-old daughter home. But she didn’t respond. Opposite the Merritt family home is a large cornfield. The woman ran there and screamed until she was hoarse, but she did not find her daughter. Timberlin called the rescue service.

“I thought my daughter would be scared because it was dark and she was all alone,” Timberlin recalled.

The search involved 150 people, including neighbors and police officers. They split into groups and scoured the field; the corn stalks were up to two meters high.

“There are all kinds of wild animals around here,” Timberlin said. “We hear coyotes howling all the time,” she added.

The search continued throughout the night. The next day, around 8 a.m., rescuers heard a dog barking. People headed in the direction of the barking and soon found a girl sleeping on the ground and a Yorkshire terrier named Health 800 meters away from the house. “My daughter told us the dog had spent the night with her. Health is just a hero,” the girl’s mother said.

Upon seeing her daughter, Timberlin burst into tears. The medics said the girl was fine, with only insect bites.
