The janitor was surprised by a surprise organized by the entire school.
The staff at a West Virginia elementary school learned that the janitor had never celebrated her birthday. They decided to surprise her.
Kind and hardworking janitor Francis is loved by both children and teachers. The school principal accidentally learned that Francis’s birthday was coming up and she would be turning 77. It turned out that Francis had never celebrated her birthday. “We decided to come up with something for her,” recalls the principal.
Francis was surprised when the school radio announced that she needed to go to the cafeteria urgently. As soon as she appeared in the doorway, children and adults shouted loudly, “Surprise!” And so began Francis’s first-ever birthday celebration. They put a festive ribbon with the inscription “Happy Birthday” on her, a pink tiara, and sat her in a high chair. A cart with cupcakes and cookies completed the celebration. Amid applause and laughter, they showed a collage of photos where Francis was a participant in all the key events in the country’s history.
Frances said she grew up in a poor family and they never celebrated the holidays. This school night was her first birthday party ever!
