Meatballs with potatoes and béchamel sauce: a delicious twist on the Swedish classic.

Most countries have a traditional dish, and Sweden is no exception. Swedish meatballs for whom, please?

But it’s hard to imagine the influence that French cuisine can have on modern Swedish cuisine.

So why not combine these two fantastic gastronomies?

This recipe does it in a very daring way. It contains many of my favourite ingredients and combines them in a very creative way, enhancing their flavours in the best possible way.

That said, let’s get started – because you won’t want to miss this recipe!

You will need :

3 potatoes, peeled and cooked
1 clove garlic
1 packet of beef
1 teaspoon chopped parsley
1 pinch paprika
1 large block of grated mozzarella cheese
salt and pepper

For the Béchamel sauce :

5 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
4 cups milk
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

How to make it:

1. Before starting anything, prepare the béchamel sauce. This is the main ingredient in the recipe. Melt the butter over a medium heat in a medium-sized saucepan. Then add the flour and stir until smooth and golden.

2. Meanwhile, heat the milk in another saucepan to just before boiling. When it is hot enough, gradually add the milk to the butter mixture and stir constantly until smooth. Once all the milk has been incorporated, leave the sauce to boil for around 10 minutes, stirring continuously. Finish by seasoning with salt and nutmeg!

3. Now that your sauce is ready, preheat your oven to 200°C. Take a large glass bowl and mix the meat with the chopped parsley and paprika. Season with a little salt and pepper.

4. Peel the potatoes and cook until half cooked. This takes about seven minutes. Then cut the potatoes into slices and line the inside of another glass bowl with the potatoes as in the image below.

5. Next, take the meat mixture and make meatballs from it. You should have at least 15. Place them on top of the potato crust in the bowl.

6. Arrange the remaining potatoes so that they fit between the meatballs. Then add the béchamel sauce on top until each meatball is covered. Then top with a good layer of grated mozzarella.

7. Finally, place the dish in the oven for 15 minutes. When it’s done, you’ll have a delicious creamy Franco-Swedish cheese casserole that the whole family will love!
