FANTASTIC SCULPTURES: NEW LIFE FOR SCRAP METAL

Brian Mock, an American from Oregon, turns metal into sculptures. He creates animals: cats, dogs, bears, octopuses, and even elephants. He also makes sculptures of people and musical instruments.

Even as a child, Brian developed an aptitude for drawing. As he got older, he developed an interest in painting and woodcarving.

In the late 1990s, Brian began creating sculptures out of recycled metal. He learned how to weld it himself.

“Giving old, ordinary objects new life by turning them into sculpture is artistically challenging, but enjoyable,” Brian said. He also said the audience’s reaction fuels creativity and helps bring ideas to life.

The sculptor’s collection includes realistic life-size figures, and sometimes more.

Brian carefully selects the metal parts to be recycled. He determines the appropriateness of the shape of the future sculpture. For example, he uses flexible metal chains to represent dog tails and large sheets of curved metal to create hanging ears.

Each work is unique. “My works come to life as soon as they have eyes, or when I achieve fluidity of movement, such as in the mane, wool, or the curve of the fin,” the artist said about the final stage of the work.

Brian’s metal sculptures are displayed in art galleries and hotels. They are purchased by collectors from all over the world.
