Helen Andrews works as an animal rescuer. She had to set traps for feral cats on the streets of Brooklyn. In a pack of cats, she noticed a big cat she named Grandpa Joe.
Helen participates in events to capture feral cats who are sterilized and then returned to the streets. When Grandpa Joe is trapped, the girl notices that he is an atypical feral cat.
“He meowed loudly in the trap, usually a sign that the cat is friendly. As a rule, feral cats sit quietly unless they are nursing females,” Helen explained.
After medical help, the cat was taken to the area where he was caught. But Grandpa Joe didn’t rush off, as feral cats usually do. He stood beside Hellen, and when she called his name, he meowed back. “I knew he didn’t belong on the street,” Hellen recalls.
The girl brought the cat home. Grandpa Joe was happy and purred the whole time. “He wanted to be put on my lap and cuddled,” Helen said.
“The cat has a great appetite. Right now he weighs about 5 kilograms, but I think he can put on weight,” Hellen shared.
As it turned out, the cat was four years old. Although he looks rough, he is very friendly. “Grandpa Joe looks older than his years because he lived on the street and no one took care of him. I think he used to live in a house.”
“Grandpa Joe was a little scared at first, but he gradually settled into his new home,” Helen said.
