Ian Ellis was birdwatching at Frampton Marsh Nature Reserve in Lincolnshire, UK. The man noticed a herd of cows huddled together and looking in the same direction.

Ian pointed the spyglass at the herd and saw that they were interested in a small seal stuck in the mud. The man called the seal sanctuary and reported the incident. He was told what to do. With the help of the sanctuary staff, Ian rescued the seal from the mud. The baby was then taken to the seal hospital.

It is suspected that the seal was brought to the reserve by the tide from the North Sea. The veterinarians have determined that it is a female, only five days old and most likely an orphan. The cub was found to have a lung infection and was emaciated and dehydrated. Duncan Yedon, director of the seal sanctuary, says the cub is sweet and trusting. “She doesn’t try to bite. She is very docile,” he added.

For three months, the baby seal will live in the sanctuary, gaining weight and learning to eat fish. Then it will be released into the wild.
