The dog from the K-9 unit almost died and became a hero

Dog Riggs serves in the K-9 unit of the police force. He was once involved in the pursuit of a man believed to have killed two people in Chicago.

The dog suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the apprehension. He was taken to a veterinary clinic. Deputy Terry Tift says he was very worried about Riggs.

“He’s family, he always has been. He did his job and saved my life.”

Sheriff David G. Beth said the dog grabbed the suspect and prevented him from running out onto the highway. “He could have tried to steal the car and that would have complicated the situation,” he added.

Riggs survived and after being discharged from hospital he was greeted by police officers and local residents. Watch the video.
