Man drives across country to save dog from death

Trucker Mario Rodriguez received a message from his wife while he was driving around California. His wife saw a picture of the pit bull on the website of a shelter in New York and asked her husband to pick up the dog as soon as possible.

Mario liked Hickory. The pit bull reminded him of his past dog. Hickory was on the euthanasia list, and no one took him in for a long time. The man decided to save the dog.

The driver contacted the employer and asked for a route to New York. He agreed. Mario had 4,500 kilometers to cover. During the trip, Mario called the shelter every day, saying he was on his way, and asking them not to put Hickory to sleep. After six days, the driver reached the shelter.

“The dog seemed to be waiting for me, he quickly became attached to me,” the man recalls.

Mario took Hickory home to Georgia. There Hickory met two pit bulls. They started playing together right away.

Soon Mario was off on a trip, but not alone. Hickory became his partner. The man says he will try to save more pit bulls when he retires.
