A turtle damaged its shell in a fire – and was given a new one

After forest fires in Brazil, rescuers found a turtle with a badly damaged shell. Without it, turtles have difficulty living in the wild, so the animal needed help.

As a result of a forest fire in Brazil, a male turtle called Freddy seriously damaged his shell. It is crucial for the turtle’s life and protection – without it, his chances of survival in the wild would be very slim. So Freddy was in dire need of help – and luckily, some kind people came along the way.

The Animal Avengers veterinary team has been around for a while now, helping injured animals in urgent need of medical attention. To save Freddy, the doctors decided to use a 3D printer. Four vets, a designer and a surgeon were involved in the process. The team took the necessary measurements and modelled a new shell for Freddy.

Then the new shell was printed using a 3D printer. At first, it was a pure white shell made up of several pieces. The shell fit the turtle perfectly, and the team decided to embellish it a bit to make it look real.

The shell was painted so that it was as close to the real thing as possible. Now happy Freddy can’t get enough of it – he’s happily crawling around with his new shell, and it fits him perfectly. Thanks to the caring doctors!
