The girl saw this frail creature in the cold street – it was a small gecko, covered in crusts and clearly very weak. She could not walk past and leave the abandoned lizard behind.
Back in mid-October, a German woman named Ellen found a gecko in the street. The lizard was in a sad state, covered in crusts, and it was likely that it had been thrown away by irresponsible owners. In addition, it was cold outside, so she couldn’t leave the gecko alone.
Ellen took it to her house, and later called Leo. “He was in such bad shape that I wasn’t sure he would survive the night at all. He was very weak, couldn’t even drink on his own and refused to eat. I managed to give him a drop of water from my finger,” says the girl.
The girl studied information about gecko care on the internet, and helped Leo as much as she could. The next morning it was feeling better. The gecko finally expressed a desire to eat, and ate a little from its guardian’s hands. Meanwhile, Ellen posted a photo of the lizard in local social media groups to look for possible owners who might have lost it. But no one responded.
Later, the girl bought an aquarium for Leo and continued to look after it. She gave Leo baths every day to restore its skin, which it loved, and she fed it on a schedule. The lizard was getting better thanks to this care – slowly but surely.
So a couple of months have gone by, and Leo has transformed into a completely different gecko. Its skin condition has improved manifold and its colouring is recovering. It is much more active, and of course Ellen is very grateful. During this time the girl has decided that Leo is now part of her family and will stay with her forever. They have become very attached to each other.
