A FINDING IN THE GARBAGE SHOCKED THE JANITORS

Andre Harvey and Scott Clemens work as garbage collectors in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On that rainy day, they were unloading trash from street bins into the back of a car. The men noticed some movement in the trash. At first they thought it was a rat, but the animal was obviously bigger.

There were piles of heavy, wet garbage on it. If they had turned on the compactor (trash compactor), the animal would have died. They turned off the engine and started digging through the trash. The men pulled out a puppy that someone had thrown in the trash. It was alive.

The dog was shivering from the cold. The workers wrapped it in a shirt and took it to the city’s animal control service. The dog was then handed over to the city’s animal shelter. It turned out to be a pit bull terrier, five months old. It had injuries, but minor ones.

Andre considers the dog’s rescue a miracle, as it could have drowned or been crushed by debris.
