A puma cub that lost its sight while still very young would not have been able to survive on its own in the wild. Luckily, kind people crossed its path just in time.
A baby cougar named Estanislao was injured as a child. The poor cub, along with his brother, was hit by a combine harvester in Argentina and suffered irreversible damage to his nervous system, which made him go blind. Witnesses saw a mother cougar come to pick up the cubs, but she only took one baby boy, and Estanislao was left lying alone – his mother never came back for him.
Fortunately, the little cub ended up in good hands after the incident. He was taken in by the Punakawan animal sanctuary, and the owner, Kai Pacha, personally took care of him, often carrying him in her arms. “Estanislao suffered serious and irreversible damage to his central nervous system. He will need lifelong support – he cannot survive on his own in the wild. Since his rescue, our main task has been to ensure his comfort,” writes the sanctuary owner.
After the cub grew and recovered, he was transported to the sanctuary, where he became friends with the other animals – and especially with the sanctuary owner’s dog Mojo. A very strong bond has developed between him and his guardian – he makes no secret of his love and gratitude, and he is completely at ease around Kai.
Despite his peculiarity, Estanislao lives a full life. He is surrounded by care, friends and guardians, and enjoys every day. He also walks confidently around the reserve – you wouldn’t even say at first glance that he is blind. Estanislao plays with other rescued baby cougars. Although he is forbidden to communicate with the adults, he is not bothered by this at all.
